Percutaneous Nephrostomy

A simple and effective way to drain urine when there’s a blockage

A percutaneous nephrostomy is a procedure where a small, soft tube is placed
into the kidney to drain urine when the normal flow is blocked. This helps relieve
pressure, pain, and prevents damage to the kidney.

Using ultrasound and X-ray guidance, a doctor places the tube through the skin and
into the kidney. The urine then drains into a bag outside the body.

Why is it done?
This procedure is usually done when something is blocking the ureter (the tube that
carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). Common causes include:

      • Kidney stones
      • Tumors (in or near the urinary system)
      • Infections
      • Narrowing of the ureter (strictures)

    What are the benefits?

      • Relieves pain and pressure quickly
      • Protects kidney function
      • Helps control infection
      • Minimally invasive – no major surgery required
      • Usually done with local anesthesia and sedation

What to expect after the procedure:

      • You’ll have a drainage tube attached to a small bag
      • The area will be covered with a bandage
      • You may need to keep the tube for a short or longer period, depending on
      • your condition
      • Your doctor will guide you on how to care for the tube at home

This procedure is safe and effective, and it often plays a key role in treating kidney problems caused by blockages.
